...RECORD WET SUMMER WEATHER FOR JUNEAU IN 2014...

THE YEAR 2014 BEGAN VERY MUCH WARMER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL WITH
SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN NORMAL SNOWFALL IN JUNEAU. AS IT TURNED OUT,
THESE TRENDS WOULD SET THE TONE FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR.

NINE OF THE 12 MONTHS IN 2014 RECORDED MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
THAT WERE ABOVE NORMAL. UNFORTUNATELY FOR SNOW LOVERS, TWO OF THE
THREE MONTHS WITH THE GREATEST DEPARTURES ABOVE NORMAL WERE JANUARY
AND THEN AGAIN IN DECEMBER. THE JANUARY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 36.3
DEGREES WAS A WHOPPING 8.3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. ANOTHER NOTABLE
WARMER-THAN-NORMAL MONTH WAS MAY. WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 52.2
DEGREES, MAY WAS 3.6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. IN MANY WAYS, SUMMER IN
JUNEAU WAS THE MONTH OF MAY. ALTHOUGH THE WARMEST DAY OF THE YEAR
OCCURRED IN AUGUST WHEN THE TEMPERATURE ROSE TO 77 DEGREES, MAY
SPORTED SOME VERY FINE WARM WEATHER WITH A WARMER AVERAGE HIGH
TEMPERATURE THAN JUNE AND ONLY SLIGHTLY COOLER THAN THE AVERAGE HIGHS
FOR JULY AND AUGUST. THE DAILY HIGH OF 75 DEGREES ON MAY 16TH TIED
THE FIRST OF AUGUST FOR THE THIRD WARMEST DAY OF THE YEAR. MAY IS
ALREADY ONE OF THE DRIEST MONTHS OF THE YEAR AND, WITH A
PRECIPITATION DEFICIT OF 1.73 INCHES IN 2014, THE MONTH WAS ALL THE
MORE DRY AND SUMMER-LIKE. APART FROM MAY, WARMER THAN NORMAL
CONDITIONS GENERALLY OCCURRED DURING THE COLDER PORTIONS OF THE YEAR.
JUNE TURNED OUT TO BE 1.6 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. JULY WAS NEAR NORMAL
AND AUGUST WAS A LITTLE LESS THAN ONE DEGREE ABOVE NORMAL.

FOR AS ABNORMALLY WARM AS JANUARY WAS, FEBRUARY 2014 WAS EQUALLY
EXTREME AS A COLDER THAN NORMAL MONTH. ALTHOUGH NO RECORD COLD
TEMPERATURES WERE RECORDED, THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 23.9
DEGREES WAS 6.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR
OCCURRED ON THE 12TH WHEN THE MERCURY DIPPED DOWN TO ZERO, WHICH WAS
25 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OVERNIGHT VALUE FOR THAT TIME OF THE
YEAR. DAILY HIGHS AND LOWS REMAINED IN BELOW-NORMAL TERRITORY FOR ALL
BUT 5 DAYS OF THE MONTH. A BRIEF BREAK IN THE FRIGID CONDITIONS
OCCURRED MID-MONTH BEGINNING ON THE 14TH. IT WAS DURING THIS TIME
THAT JUNEAU RECEIVED MOST OF ITS FEBRUARY PRECIPITATION AS WELL -
NEARLY ALL OF IT AS SNOW AND NEARLY 2 FEET OVER THE COURSE OF THOSE 5
DAYS. IN SPITE OF A PRECIPITATION DEFICIT OF LESS THAN HALF THE
NORMAL AMOUNT, FEBRUARY SNOWFALL OF 26.8 INCHES WAS 10 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL. THIS MID-MONTH SNOW WAS ONE OF ONLY TWO BRIGHT SPOTS IN THE
SNOW TOTALS FOR 2014. THE OTHER CAME IN THE LAST DAYS OF NOVEMBER.
AFTER VIRTUALLY NO SNOW AT ALL THROUGH NOVEMBER 28TH, THE SNOW SEASON
IN JUNEAU BEGAN WITH A MAJOR WINTER STORM THAT PRODUCED 9.8 INCHES.
THE LATE START TO THE SNOW SEASON WAS THE THIRD LATEST IN THE JUNEAU
AREA SINCE WORLD WAR II. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE WOULD BE VERY LITTLE
ADDITIONAL SNOW IN DECEMBER, WHICH WAS WARMER THAN NORMAL BY 3.5
DEGREES AND DRIER THAN NORMAL BY 2.55 INCHES. THE RESULTING DECEMBER
SNOWFALL OF 2.3 INCHES WAS MORE THAN A FOOT BELOW NORMAL, AND THE
ANNUAL SNOW TOTAL OF 51.1 INCHES WAS ALMOST 3 FEET BELOW NORMAL.

APART FROM SNOW TOTALS, ACCUMULATED PRECIPITATION TOTALS FOR THE YEAR
2014 STARTED OUT ABOVE NORMAL AND REMAINED AT OR ABOVE NORMAL ALL
YEAR LONG. THE RECORD FOR INDIVIDUAL MONTHS, HOWEVER, WAS NOT QUITE
AS DRAMATIC. IN FACT, 7 OF THE 12 MONTHS LAST YEAR ACTUALLY REPORTED
BELOW NORMAL MONTHLY PRECIPITATION VALUES. WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE
WAS VERY HEAVY PRECIPITATION IN JANUARY, AND THEN AGAIN DURING THE
SUMMER MONTHS OF JUNE, JULY, AND AUGUST. ACCUMULATED PRECIPITATION
DURING THESE 3 MONTHS TOTALLED 24.27 INCHES AND REPRESENTED THE
WETTEST SUMMER ON RECORD FOR JUNEAU. OTHER NOTABLE WET SUMMERS
INCLUDE 2006 IN THIRD PLACE WITH 21.38 INCHES, 2012 IN FIFTH PLACE
WITH 19.65 INCHES, AND 2011 IN SIXTH PLACE WITH 18.73 INCHES. AS A
WHOLE, THE ANNUAL PRECIPITATION TOTAL OF 68.69 INCHES RANKS ONLY
12TH, BEHIND OTHER YEARS SUCH AS 2006 WITH 74.29 INCHES, 2013 WITH
73.74 INCHES, AND THE ALL-TIME WETTEST YEAR OF 1961 WITH 85.15
INCHES.
